What is this by-election?

A by-election is held when a parliamentary seat becomes vacant between general elections. Gorton and Denton's seat became vacant after Andrew Gwynne resigned as MP in January 2026, following his suspension from Labour in 2025.

Why it matters: Labour won this seat with 51% in 2024, but Labour lost a similar seat with a larger vote majority in Runcorn and Helsby. Reform, Labour and the Greens are all competitive, making this a genuine three-way race. The constituency is sharply divided: Manchester's wards (65% of votes) skew young and diverse, while Tameside's (35%) skew older and whiter. This constituency already had low turnout in 2024 at 48%. By-election turnout is usually even lower and could be the decider, along with tactical voting.
