How are Holyrood seats calculated?

The Scottish Parliament has 129 seats: 73 constituency MSPs elected by first-past-the-post, and 56 regional list MSPs allocated across 8 regions using the D'Hondt method. The regional allocation takes into account constituency results to produce a more proportional outcome.

What is the D'Hondt method?

D'Hondt is a proportional representation method used to allocate Holyrood's 56 regional list seats. Each party's regional vote is divided by the number of seats they have already won (constituency + list) plus one. The highest quotient wins the next seat. This process repeats until all 7 regional seats are allocated in each of the 8 regions.
